Mounted Squad horses are mostly draft, or draft cross geldings. They must be at least 16 hands with a calm disposition. Horses are purchased from individuals or donated if they meet the requirements and pass an exam from a vet. The ages of the horses range from 4 to 22 years old. A police horse can work into his mid 20's and are medically retired when a vet determines they are no longer able to perform police functions on the streets.
