More Information on Special Salary Benefits:

Tuition Reimbursement. Up to $1,500 per fiscal year in college tuition reimbursement for job applicable classes.

Education Pay.  Officers with a bachelor’s degree receive $300.00 per month.  Officers without a college degree but with college hours above the minimum required 45 semester hours receive $12 per month for every additional 3 hours college credit up to a maximum of $240.00 per month.

Language Skills Pay.  Officers fluent in Spanish, Khmer, Cantonese, Korean, Kurdish, Lao, Thai, or Vietnamese receive $110.00 to $150.00 per month depending on proficiency.

Overtime.  Officers have the option of receiving either overtime pay or compensatory time when working longer than their standard workday. The overtime rate will be one and one-half times the regular rate of hourly pay for all time worked over the officer's standard work day. Off-duty officers attending court are paid a minimum of two hours overtime.  Compensatory time will be accrued at one and one-half hours for each hour worked over the standard workday.

Sick Leave.  Officers accrue four hours of sick leave each bi-weekly pay period (80 hours) up to 12 days annually.

Vacation Leave.  Officers accumulate vacation leave based on their years of service. Vacation is earned each bi-weekly pay period (80 hours).

Work Schedule.  Officers assigned to patrol duties work five 8 hour shifts with 2 days off, or four 10 hour shifts with 3 days off. Officers are assigned to a watch by seniority. Shift start and end times vary.

Uniforms.  Officers are issued all uniforms, equipment, and firearms. Duty footwear is not issued. 

Retirement.  Officers for the City of Dallas are members of the Dallas Police and Fire Pension System (DPFP) which is a qualified defined benefit pension plan. Members of DPFP contribute 13.5% of their compensation pay while the City of Dallas contributes 34.5% of base pay.  Members are eligible to receive full pension benefits when they attain age 58.  Members are vested after five years of service.  Members are eligible to retire and receive reduced pension benefits if at least one of the below criteria is met:

  1. Have at least 5 years service and at least 53 years of age.
  2. Have at least 20 years of service with any age.

Employee Savings Plans.  The City of Dallas offers a retirement savings plan 401(k) and a Deferred Compensation Plan 457(b). 

Life insurance.  The City of Dallas provides basic life coverage in the amount of $75,000.00 to full-time employees. Employees may elect to buy additional coverage up to 3X their annual earnings. (Subject to yearly change). 

Promotions.   Promotions to the ranks of Senior Corporal, Sergeant, and Lieutenant are based on competitive civil service examinations. Promotions to the ranks of Major, Deputy Chief, and Assistant Chief are through appointment by the Chief of Police. 


Veterans & Military Personnel 

Military Leave Days.  Officers who are members of the Reserve Component of the Armed Forces receive 15 paid days of military leave per fiscal year. In addition, the City of Dallas offers flexible days off to our National Guard and Reserve officers to meet military training requirements. 

G.I. Bill®. Approved to train eligible veterans and their dependents under the GI Bill®.
